To These Hills

Research & Development for a one woman show, incorporating storytelling, spoken word and an original score, exploring the intricate relationship between place and identity.

Currently being developed during a 3 month artist residence at Leith Hill Place with the National Trust & Surrey Hills Arts.

Developed through contemporary interviews and historical source material. This work explores what Englishness means within our complex and multicultural society. And asks: how can we shape an inclusive cultural identity through a deep rooted connection to landscape and place?

A Dialogue Between People, Place and Poetry

English identity has become ever more politicised, with the tabloids constantly equating national identity with xenophobic rhetoric. Challenging this perception of Englishness, this work is inspired by the rich history of English poets, artists and musicians who transcend this definition of exclusionary nationalism by defining their cultural identity through a deep rooted connection to our shared landscape.
